When I made this art, I was listening to the singing of The Lady Lifers at SCI Muncy. And I was thinking of my friends and former classmates incarcerated at SCI Huntingdon and SCI Smithfield. Both influenced this watercolor and collage with womxn being the focus. The “free them all” banner is a call for liberation. Because detention centers, prisons, and jails are a threat to life, health, and justice. Especially in the midst of a global pandemic.
Medium: Watercolor and mixed medium
[Image description: The piece depicts five women in prison wearing burgundy uniforms. The women have varying skins tones, hair color and types and one wears a hijab, with a variety of blue tones carrying throughout. The women appear to be smiling. Below the depiction of the women, a yellow banner repeats the phrase “Free them all.” The background is bright blue with a gold trim with additional layers of large diamond shapes of different colors and patterns.]
